MALAGA (EuroBasket 2011) - Spain coach Sergio Scariolo will be monitoring the play of Unicaja Malaga signing Jorge Garbajosa while weighing up his options ahead of EuroBasket 2011.

Garbajosa, who first played for Spain in a big international tournament at EuroBasket 2001 in Turkey, is now 33 and in the midst of a difficult season.

He recently lost his first-team place at Real Madrid and was effectively put on the transfer list but clinched a move to his former club, Malaga, where he played for Scariolo five years ago.

"Obviously all of the players that can be of interest for the national team must perform highly for their respective clubs,” Scariolo said.

“In Jorge's case, to play is just crucial in order for him to give his best for him and for the national team.

“The important thing right now is that he is able to enjoy playing and help Unicaja."

Scariolo is hoping that Garbajosa can provide a spark for Unicaja, who are eighth in the ACB.

"I hope this is good for the club and for Jorge,” Scariolo said.

“Jorge has a lot to give and I trust that he will help the team in the final months of the competition.

“Jorge wants to play after the complicated start to the season and not playing.

“Unicaja needs a player like him that can give consistency in long range shooting and experience and strong mentality.”

To add spice to Garbajosa’s move to Malaga is that the club hosts Real Madrid on Saturday.

Garbajosa was a leading player in the Spain team that captured the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan
